Italian citizenship by descent (Jure Sanguinis) is recognition of citizenship based on an unbroken bloodline from an Italian-born ancestor. You may qualify if your parent or grandparent was an Italian citizen at time of your birth and your ancestor did not voluntarily naturalise in another country before the birth of their child in your lineage. If your Italian parent or grandparent was born abroad, they must have resided in Italy for at least two consecutive years before your birth or maintained demonstrable cultural connection. If claiming through female ancestor, her child must have been born on or after 1 January 1948 (earlier cases require judicial petition).
